    Programme for teachers

C.V Raman Over the years, with the help of its Fellowship, the Academy has built up a database of bright and motivated teachers from colleges and universities around the country. These teachers are invited to the scientific meetings of the Academy and participate in our science education programmes. It thus provides opportunities for them to attend the scientific programmes and to meet and interact with Fellows of the Academy. Over the past decade, about 650 teachers have attended the Academy meetings.

Programme for teachers the day before the Mid-Year Meeting

On the day prior to the start of the Mid-Year meeting in July, a half-day programme of lectures is arranged for the benefit of these invited teachers. This programme was started several years ago in 2006, by the then Editor of Journal of Biosciences V. Nanjundiah. It consisted of semi-popular lectures in biology. This one-day programme entitled 'Biology Today' had lectures by prominent biologists.

In 2011, the focus slightly shifted and the programme included mini-symposia of lectures both in life sciences and earth sciences. In 2012, the programme was a symposium entitled "Bridging the gap between Earth and Life Sciences" and covered four lectures in earth sciences. It was coordinated by Professors Nibir Mandal and PN Vinayachandran.

In 2013, as a new concept, a few of the invited teachers were provided an opportunity to give lecture presentations on their area of work as well as about their experiences in working as a teacher. This was followed by an interactive session. A half-day mini-symposium entitled 'Lectures in Physics and Chemistry' covering three lectures, was conducted for the benefit of invited teachers. Professors V.A. Raghunathan and E. Arunan coordinated this symposium.

Laser spectroscopic applications from physics to biology and medicine .
S Umapathy, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore
Lasers have become an essential light source in spectroscopic applications due to their inherent coherence and intensity. Understanding chemical bond-specific vibrational energy redistribution and relaxation of excited molecular states and also their bond-specific structural dynamics has been a challenge. We show examples of energy migration and coherent oscillation of coupled vibrational modes, which provide information on early time response of a molecular system on excitation. In the case of biology and medicine, we would present results of both infrared and Raman microscopic approaches to studying tissues, cell-drug interactions, and lab-on-chip applications.

Glimpses of femtosecond and single molecule spectroscopy
Kankan Bhattacharyya, Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science, Kolkata
This talk begins with a brief introduction to femtosecond (10 sec) spectroscopy. From simple kinetic theory of gas one can predict that chemical bonds break in 100 femtosecond and hence femtosecond spectroscopy allows one to "see" and study ultrafast bond breaking. Interestingly, all femtosecond lasers use a simple theory developed by Raman and Nath at IISc Bangalore in 1935. The single molecule spectroscopy (SMS) is a new frontier of science which allows one to "see" one single molecule. We discuss how SMS is revolutionizing physics, chemistry and biology.

Radiation: the key to understanding the Universe
Pushpa Khare, The Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics, Pune
Almost all our knowledge of the Universe comes from analysing the radiation that we passively receive from heavenly objects. It is a tribute to human ingenuity and spirit that we have learnt all that we know about the vast, seemingly infinite Universe, with such limited resources at our disposal. This talk presents some of the techniques used to analyse this radiation and the different kinds of information about its source that we can glean from such measurements. Finally, some glimpses of our current state of understanding of some aspects of the Universe are presented.
