Refresher Courses
Two-week Refresher Courses form an important segment of the activities of the Science Academies' Programmes organized by the Joint Science Education Panel of the three Science Academies. The primary focus is to enhance the quality of science education at undergraduate and graduate levels. This is an all-India programme primarily aimed at helping motivated teachers improve their background knowledge and teaching skills and thus add value to their teaching. A small number of research students can also be admitted if there are seats.
The Course content designed to meet the above need usually has direct relevance to the materials covered in the graduate and undergraduate curricula in universities and institutions in the country. Discussions about modern areas of topical interest are also a part of the Course content.
The duration is 13-14 days and approximately 30 teachers and a few students are selected from all over the country for each Course. They undergo a rigorous course of lectures, discussions, laboratory experiments, and problem-solving sessions. The University Grants Commission has notified that teachers in Universities and Colleges attending two-week Refresher Cources are entitled to be considered for promotion.
From 1999 to till date, Refresher Courses on a variety of topics, a majority of them in Experimental Physics, have been organized throughout the country.
